Moment of Geek: True Blood!

Ahhhhh it's been almost a year since we were all gushing over Sookie, Bill, Eric, and the rest of the gang and we're finally getting better glimpses of what's in store for Season 3! I'm not sure how I'm feeling about all this werewolf stuff, but i'd be lying if I said I wasn't looking forward to some major Eric/Sookie time. Check out the latest Season 3 trailer and go to the website to watch the (mostly unfulfilling) mini-sodes!

Moment of Geek: True Blood!

Ahhhhh! It's almost the end of Season 2! I don't know what to think. I'm sure everything is going to turn out all right in the end, just like last season, but then again who knows. I'm definitely liking the Queen. Hoyt is stupid and needs to quit being a momma's boy (although I guess he's just trying to be good, it keeps kicking him in the face.) Tara needs a serious ass whooping already (as does her ex-drunk momma.) And who else was as amused as I was by seeing Eric dressed up as Lettie Mae? As much as I liked Bill before, even Eric brought up an excellent point: Bill DID let Sookie feed from him from the get go. And thinking about it, she DID start their relationship as a result of their meeting (and the consequent dreams of him thereafter, similar to her new dreams about Eric.) So is Sookie actually in love with Bill or was this just a side effect from drinking his blood? Hrm.... Jason's character is getting a little silly again, but I hope it gets better. Oh, and not to keep beating the Eric horse dead but, he was too cute talking to those kids. Ahhhhhh. September 13th is much too far! And what ever will we do with our Sunday nights (or in my case, Monday afternoons) once the season is over?!

Moment of Geek: True Blood!

SurfTheChannel was being uncooperative today, so today's TrueBlood experience was achieved via TV Duck. Let's see.... We only got about 2 minutes of Eric-time, but it was probably a good thing. It was nice to see Bill as a competent character (mostly) after the last few episodes of him basically being tossed aside as a weak vampire. Jason Stackhouse and all his southern boy charm were at it again as he played "God" for a while. We're finally getting Tara back (now if only we can glamour the entire town of Bon Temps!) Maryanne is still a raging bitch and I can't wait for this season to be done so I can see how they get rid of her honestly. And now of course I'm also wonder, just what IS Sookie? Hrm... Questions, questions.

And now we get a new character! The Queen herself, Ms. Evan Rachel Wood (thanks, internet spoilers!) I don't really know much about her to be honest. She was in Running with Scissors (which apparently was a forgettable movie since I can't recall her or anyone else in it) and Across the Universe (which was nice visually, but was overrated I thought.) I do, however, recall her as a child in one of my favorite guilty pleasure girlie holiday films - Practical Magic, as Sandra Bullock's eldest daughter. So we'll see how this all pans out. Plus apparently she's going to be in the upcoming film American Pastoral, based on the very fantastic book by Philip Roth, so mad respect to a girl that wants to star in that (I haven't seen anything by director Phillip Noyce, but am hopeful he'll do good by the book.) Anyway... getting back to the subject at hand, here's the trailer for the next episode of True Blood!

I'm psyched for next week already!

Moment of Geek: True Blood!

Time to gush. Eric's shrewdness is becoming both annoying and attractive, and I guess that's the point. I keep hearing about a possibly Eric/Sookie romance and well, who knows. I don't know how i'd feel about that, although I guess this is why they've been downplaying Bill's original suaveness these days (making him appear even weaker than before.) I miss the Fellowship but perhaps there will be a comeback by the end? The whole Maryanne bit is getting to be kind of annoying in my eyes. I don't know how they'll write themselves out of this one, but I'm sure it'll work out in the end. Plus they've made Tara become such an annoying bitch and it makes me miss how cool Tara and Lafayette were last season. I keep hoping that Terry will get a bigger part because although his character on Gilmore Girls sucked, he's actually likeable here. Hoyt and Jessica's romance is definitely becoming my favorite and kudos to Hoyt for standing up to his overbearing momma. That lady needs a good slap in the face. Ah... And then there's Godric. What an episode ending! Very sweet and ultimately sad. I think it's the first episode of True Blood that made me shed a tear.

3 episodes are left. Anyone care to make any comments as to how you think it'll go down? Jason Stackhouse with a chainsaw in the preview!? Ahhhh, can't wait!

Moment of Geek: True Blood!

Ahhh. Can't get enough! Although I'm kind of getting annoyed at the Tara/Sam story line (it almost seems unnecessary?), the Fellowship of the Sun story line is awesome. Jason Stackhouse, in all his ridiculousness, has won me over as of late. Godric is pretty damn cool also. I like his decorum at not abusing his power. Best line from the episode goes to Jason: "I reckon i've already been to heaven. It was inside your wife." Zing!

Anyway, enough gushing. Here's the preview for next week's episode!

Sometimes I seriously wish I had HBO.

Moment of Geek: True Blood

I started watching True Blood on a whim. I was kinda iffy, what with all the Twilight hubub that had been going on (which I have yet to check out... if I ever decide to at all, that is.) But True Blood just looked like it would be better than that from the get go. After all, it IS written by Alan Ball, of American Beauty/Six Feet Under fame. I really dug the whodunit vibe of Season 1, especially because i've never been a fan of the mystery genre (but I guess I can dig anything if it involves vampires... or zombies too, actually.) Season 1 ended on a bizarre note and I was almost a little weary of Season 2 getting a bit too off the wall for my taste (note: shape shifters and crazy demon type lady.) But Mr. Ball and Ms. Charlaine Harris are totally proving me wrong because it all really, really works. The show is really getting good now. This last episode was better than any yet. Here's the preview for the next episode! Ahh, August 2nd is too far!

Vampire Fetish: Take A Bite.

So just like most True Blood fans, I am eagerly (impatiently) anticipating next week's latest installment of this dirty south vampire novella. However, I can't help but notice how huge the vampire market is these days. Now, I haven't seen Twilight, nor have I read anything by Stephanie Meyer (funny, too, since I went to high school with a girl by the same name - but no, it's not her), so I can't really give an honest opinion about either. Part of me wants to say it's probably crap. It looks very... fantasy-ridden and the actors/actresses all look relatively young and unappealing to me. Maybe if this had been going on when I was still in high school, it would be more relatable. Still, I have several friends who have jumped on the Twilight bandwagon and claim it is amazing. I may watch it online someday... for free.. when i'm done watching everything else that needs to be watched.

But anyway! Back to the point. Vampires are hot right now! There hasn't been this much hubub about the beautiful undead since perhaps Interview with the Vampire showed two of the hottest male actors at the time (Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt... and actually, Antonio Banderas was big at the time as well) in all kinds of homo-erotic situations.

I saw the film back when it first came out in 1994 when it first came out (I was about 10 at the time), but it wasn't until about 3 years later that I became immersed in the world of Anne Rice and her seductive yet practically asexual vampires. And once I read Interview (and later, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, Pandora, Tale of the Body Thief, etc.), I quickly realized what crap the Cruise-Pitt flick was. And let me not get started on Queen of the Damned... which had all the potential in the world and had to turn out to be one of the biggest film let-downs of my relatively short life.

Vampires have existed in legend and folklore for centuries, and have become popular in pop culture ever since F.W. Murnau put Nosferatu on the big screen. I finally got around to watching that recently (or re-watching... saw it on Halloween night at some theater in Boston a few years back) and thought it was pretty great, albeit a bit slow. I haven't gotten around to Bela Lugosi's Dracula portrayals, but plan to do so this coming October (the month wherein I only allow myself to watch horror films!) I do have some personal favorites in the vampire genre asides Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, including but not limited to:

Once Bitten

The Lost Boys

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the MOVIE, not the show!)

Vampire Hunter D

From Dusk Til Dawn
(yes, i'll admit I used to hate it because I felt that the first half of the film was just much better and the vamps come out of nowhere, but upon later inspection, it's pretty great.)

Vampire Princess Miyu

X-Files: Bad Blood

So why the fascination? It could be that we all want to believe we can escape our own mortality. There's something romantic sounding about living forever. And most vampire stories have been overly-romanticized, with old period clothing and candlelight and coffins and lace and undying love. Either way, like zombie films, they're just good fun.

What are some of your favorite vampire portrayals?

Compare/Contrast.

I wasn't really a big fan of Juno, so it goes without saying that I am also not a big fan of Diablo Cody. I have nothing against her, but I guess I just got sick of the Juno hoopla pretty quickly and the fact that many other films and tv shows are using a similar style to hook Juno lovers to watch is just obnoxious.

Anyhow... the point isn't about Cody or Juno. But rather, Cody's new film Jennifer's Body, starring Megan Fox (groan) as a man-eating temptress of sorts. She's apparently possessed by a demon and starts trying to hook up with (and inevitably killing) all the boys in her high school (yes, HIGH SCHOOL.) Now, forget that I'm supposed to somehow believe that Fox is 18 (it's hard enough believing she's younger than I am and looks at least 5 or 10 years older.) Forget the gratuitous everything in the trailer. While I'm kind of happy to see any kind of bisexual character (albeit a crazy demon girl that is probably only written as "going both ways" to ensnare the young boys and more importantly, their young hard-on's)... I don't know how to feel about this movie. I like horror flicks, sure. But... well. Yeah.

Check out the trailer and let me know what you think:

Oh, and before I forget... the main reason for my post is that I have yet to read anything anywhere about the glaring similarities between the promo poster for Jennifer's Body and the one used for True Blood:

Or am I just completely insane?
